ALABAMA OPEN MARKET &
INTERNATIONAL BOER GOAT
SANCTIONED SHOW and
IBGA REGIONAL SHOW

CULLMAN, ALABAMA
26-27 MAY 2007

When Alice and Billy Thompson announced that the 2007 Cullman show would be a two-day show consisting of the normal open show and the IBGA Regional Show the day before, we knew where we would be Memorial Day weekend.

The ragtag show string, Venus, Kattie's Glory with her two babies, Mystery with her to babies, the botle baby - Fleur de Les, CCF Beverly, CCF Dancer, CCF Elly, CCF Chase and CCF Nixie we were off to Cullman. CCF Awok was suppose to make the trip as our wether, but got puny and was a last minute scratch.

We ended up with a girl with Polioencephalitis and five days from kiding who had to be boarded at the vets' to insure we didn't lose her. That delayed our arriving at out planned time.

The Mitchells, Brittany and Brandon, and their two doelings and two bucklings, made the trip south. Even with arriving later than we had guessed, we had plenty time to get a bunch of baths and groomings (9 in all). Buz Hipp showed us some grooming tips, and we met some lots of old and new friends.

With Great Pens (thanks Alice) we were set for two days of showing. Some really great animals were there. After supper at Pasquelle's (and all the garlic bread we wanted), Brittany was now ready for the show.

Saturday morning came early since we had to water and feed the goats. Then we waited for the start of the show. There was a Junior Show first, but the day moved fast. Just as we were getting Beverly out of her pend, we notices that CCF Dancer has developed a case of diarrhea and had shared some of her 'problem' onto several of the goats. With fast thinking and moving, Dancer was move to the trailer and the spotted goats cleaned. No baths, but some hard cleaning had to be done.

CCF Beverly went into the ring, walked a lot better than anyone expected and picked up a blue ribbon in the 0-3 month percentage doelings class both days, but was out-sized in the championship judging.

CCF Mystery took a fourth both days in the 16-20 month old percentage does.

CCF Nixie SA placed sixth the first day and eighth the second day in the 6 - 9 month fullblood doelings class.

CCF Elly SA, in the 12 to 16 month classe, did not make the cut either day. She did do a good job of standing and waiting.

KWM Kattie's Glory SA. The first day, Glory finished sixth and the second day moved up three spaces to finish third. The second judge thought she was an excellent doe but her working roll, raising two babies, has compromised her conditioning.

BNZ Venus made her sixth appearence at the show in Cullman. Friday night she made every attempt to move her set of cages into the next room. Saturday she entered the ring and took a second. Scorned with the mere red ribbon, she had to be moved to a different pen for Saturday night. Gripping and grumbling, we left her to her water, hay, and feed. Sunday was a better day. She entered the ring about 7 pm and impressed the Californian judge and took her rightful place and class champion, but fell short in the Senior Doe Championship competition. A massive senior doe was beaten by a feminine doe for both the championship and reserve. She took it like a pro, hurrying back to her pen for feed, hay and water.

CCF Chase, our 0-3 month old buckling, did not make the cut in a big classes.

The wether - We purchased a wether from Little Mountain Farms, Lowell and Linda Walker, and they delivered it to us in Cullman. We has scratched little Awok and had not intended to show a wether, but Sunday morning at 0700, the official found Little Mountain Xtra and he was weighed in. When we arrived, Billy Thompson told us Awok, our wether, had been weighted in. After a couple of anxious moments we remember Xtra. We found Joe Hale, and he agreeded to show the wether. At 48 pounds, he was out weighed by all in his class; but with Joe's help, Xtra - aka Awok - came away with a third place ribbon. We think Xtra will be a great wether for the fall 4-H shows.
