Holiday Schedule

Do you want to know when the best time to place your boer goats for sale? How about planning your breedings around known holidays?

I recommend you find out what the popular goat-eating holidays are in your area. I did a little bit of research, and this was the information I was able to find about holiday dates at which meat goats may be sold. Different areas of the country have different events that are celebrated by different groups of peoples. At some of those events, the size issue comes into play. So, you have to know what size animals are desired for the different occasions. (Some want very young kids still nursing; some want old bucks - without blemishes; some want that 40 to 60 pound wether). Learning what size/type animal is wanted by your buyers is as important as knowing the holidays/events. It requires a little bit of work on your part if you want to maximize your income.

In doing my homework we learned Easter is a great time for us to sell. We have to consult a calendar; find out when Easter is going to be; back off two weeks or to the nearest sale-barn selling date roughly two weeks before Easter; back off 3 months for a kidding date; then back off another 5 months for a breeding date.So if Easter is on April 8, 2 weeks prior to that is 25 March. 3 Months before that is 25 December, and 5 months prior to that is August 25. Therefore, to have our "best" product for an Easter sell, we should ensure we are breeding in the last 2 weeks of August.

Of course, your breeding results may vary. Here is what you have to do:

  1. Keep records.
  2. Know how fast or slowly your kids grow to sale weight.
  3. Know your average birth weights.
Once you know birth weights and growing time, then you can calculate approximately how long it's going to take your goats to reach the optimum sell size.

See the calendar below and refer to it for your boer goat breeding plans.
